Dan Fogelberg: A Legend Dies Too Soon
61Song: NETHERLANDS by Dan Fogelberg
In Loving Memory of Dan Fogelberg
who died this morning (12.16.07) at his home in Maine.
NETHERLANDS
by Dan Fogelberg
High on this mountain
The clouds down below
I'm feeling so strong and alive
From this rocky perch
I'll continue to search
For the wind
And the snow
And the sky
*
I want a lover
I want some friends
And I want to live in the sun
And I want to do all the things
that I never have done.
*
Sunny bright mornings
And pale moonlit nights
Keep me from feeling alone
Now, I'm learning to fly
And this freedom is like
Nothing that I've ever known
*
I've seen the bottom
And I've been on top
But mostly I've lived in between
And where do you go
When you get to the end of your dream?
*
Off in the Netherlands
I heard a sound
Like the beating of heavenly wings
And deep in my brain I can hear a refrain
Of my soul as she rises and sings
*
Anthems to glory and
Anthems to love and
Hymns filled with early delight
Like the songs that the darkness
Composes to worship the light.
*
Once in a vision
I came on some woods
And stood at a fork in the road
My choices were clear
Yet I froze with the fear
Of not knowing which way to go.
*
One road was simple
Acceptance of life
The other road offered sweet peace
When I made my decision
My vision became my release.

Every so often I go this website just to be sure it is for real that he is gone. My gosh 3 years!!! His music still soothes me till this day and when I am sad I put in his cd and have him beautiful voice sing me to sleep. I remember when I heard he had died and I literally could not breathe and could not move while my brain tried to process that I will never get to see him in concert again. My heart is still heavy. I couldn't even imagine how his wife felt and still feels. God is taking all the good people, it's no wonder this world is getting worse and worse.
Sad news but lovely hub..
I just saw this and wanted to comment. I love Dan's music. I first heard him in my Jr. year of college. Netherlands is a magnificent song lyrically and musically and a very fitting tribute to him.
Although I am only 27...and came to know Dan Fogelberg's music after his true heyday (is that how you spell that word by the way??? I just realized it's the first time I've ever typed it out. Regardless, I digress...) I always loved his music because it reminds me of my dad. He was the one who introduced me to Dan Fogelberg, and every time I listen to Leader of the Band it reminds me of my father (who is still alive and definitely kicking, thankfully). I was always a big fan of Run for the Roses as well, and Longer. I remember when I was in high school I would throw in my Dan Fogelberg Greatest Hits CD and my friends would look at me funny. It did not matter to me. What a great singer and songwriter. Thanks for reminding me.
Dan Fogelberg was one of my very favorite artists. Did you know he had stage fright so badly that he hardly ever performed live? I had tickets to a tour that was coming through my home town in SC, but it was cancelled. They said he had "the flu", but later it came out that he had had an emotional break after his first few nights of the tour. He was one of the most talented men that ever drew a breath.
Sometimes when we touch was written by Dan Hill, not Dan Fogelberg.
Its a shock - "sometimes when we touch, the honestys too much..." He was such an honest writer about his emotions he touched our hearts with so many songs. I too am of that age group and 53 is way too young to leave. Thanks for the lyric above, it is hard to know what to say when someone dies but you chose well. Thanks.

I too am a fan of Dan Fogelberg, he will be missed but his music will live on.
A lovely way to tribute to an amazing man. His own words hold the beauty. Your silence frames the picture as it hangs in a heavenly gallery.
Love the way you simply shine a light on him!

Eesh, I didn't know he died either! I'm sorry to hear this, he was a part of my formative years. Thanks for the touching tribute with his Words.
I had no idea he died. :( He's such a great musician. May he rest in peace.
